Quantum Lights up Amsterdam:

over 1,600 Young Minds turn Science into Art

PRESS RELEASE

Amsterdam, 20 October – This year, Amsterdam Light Festival (ALF) and Quantum Delta NL (QDNL) are joining forces in a unique partnership that brings science, imagination, and art together. As part of ALF’s annual education project, over 1,600 primary school children from Amsterdam will explore the fascinating world of quantum physics - and translate their discoveries into light artworks for the festival’s citywide exhibition. This edition comes at a special moment: while Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary, the world marks the UN’s International Year of Quantum, highlighting both the city’s rich history and the future of science and innovation.

A Peek into Quantum

On 30 October, a spectacular and inspiring quantum theatre show will take place at Theatre Amsterdam, hosted by Rachel Rosier (EO) and Klaas van Kruistum (KRO NCRV). The show was created by QDNL and Qlabs for schools who have entered this year’s ALF education project. During this immersive performance, over 1,600 school children will be introduced to the mysteries of quantum in a playful and imaginative way. The show will spark curiosity and set the stage for the children’s own artistic process, as they begin to create light artworks for Amsterdam Light Festival Edition 14, presented this winter under the theme Legacy.

“This educational project shows that Amsterdam Light Festival not only impacts today but also invests in the next generation. In collaboration with QDNL, ALF offers workshops in theatre, creativity, and presentation, empowering young people to discover their talents, build confidence, and find their voice in society.”

“We’re delighted to lend our experience in Leiden with quantum education (Quantum Rules! lab) and showcasing the quantum world to the general public (Quantum Safari) in this edition of the ALF education project.”

From Science to Light Art

For this year’s education project Edition 14, ALF and QDNL are merging art and science in a way that is tangible, fun, and a little bit magical. The pupils’ visual creations – inspired by their quantum journey – will become part of the official Amsterdam Light Festival boat route, bringing the youngest generation’s imagination to tens of thousands of visitors from around the world.

"We believe the future of quantum technology starts with imagination. This collaboration brings quantum out of the labs and into classrooms, theatres, and the city itself."

Partnership with Quantum Delta NL

The collaboration with Quantum Delta NL ensures that children don’t just learn about quantum as an abstract idea, but experience it as something they can see, feel, and shape. Quantum technology offers great opportunities for society, and through art quantum knowledge becomes accessible.

About Amsterdam Light Festival

Amsterdam Light Festival transforms the canals of the city center into a canvas for light artworks. This year, artists from all over the world will shed their light on the theme of Legacy. In addition to the festival, ALF runs an extensive education project, engaging thousands of children in art and creativity every year.

About Quantum Delta NL

Quantum Delta NL is a national initiative uniting researchers, organisations and institutions to advance quantum technology in the Netherlands and beyond. By partnering with cultural initiatives like Amsterdam Light Festival, Quantum Delta NL makes quantum science accessible to the wider public and inspires the next generation.
