Q4G Challenge Winner Announcement

The very first edition of the Quantum for Good Challenge for students has concluded — and what an incredible final it was!

After an inspiring pitch session on 18 September at House of Quantum in Delft, the jury has selected the winning team of this year’s challenge, focused on using quantum sensing to tackle the global problem of microplastics.

Use case: Mapping microplastics in water using quantum sensors to help scientists understand and tackle pollution at the source.

Sensing Victory is building a quantum sensing system using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond to detect and analyze microplastics in water. Their approach supports researchers and policymakers in identifying sources of contamination and developing more effective mitigation strategies.

Team: Sander Worm, Rijk Marttin, Jorge Rodriguez Cambeiro

Use case: Using quantum sensors to detect airborne microplastics in homes and workplaces — helping protect our lungs from invisible pollution.

Q-Detectives is developing a real-time sensing solution that can be integrated into air purifiers and ventilation systems. By combining NV-center quantum sensing with machine learning, they aim to uncover pollution hotspots in indoor environments — supporting health, transparency, and informed action.

Team: Fareeda Kalsoom, Robert Jovanov, Maria Graziella Brevi

The Quantum for Good Challenge is an initiative that empowers students to explore how quantum technologies can help solve real-world societal and environmental problems. In this edition, participants explored how quantum sensing could provide new tools to detect, analyze and ultimately mitigate the presence of microplastics — an urgent but poorly understood global issue.
