QSA Technology is developing more secure digital communication encryption

What if a quantum computer could break the encryption we use today to secure our data? QSA Technology, a quantum start-up and spin-out from Pepijn Pinkse’s lab, is working to tackle this challenge. Based in Twente, they address the gap of identity authentication and work on a solution to overcome the threat to our digital security.

Digital fingerprints

QSA Technology’s photonic integrated circuits deliver digital fingerprinting capabilities that could transform telecommunications, satellite communications, cloud providers, and hyperscalers. The patent-protected chips function as a unique key, determined by random microscopic imperfections created during manufacturing. When a light pulse passes through the chip, the output is a unique, quantum-secure pattern, serving as a ‘fingerprint’ for authentication.

Complete protection against quantum-era threats

As current methods fall short, there's an urgent need for innovative approaches to secure our data for the future. Post-quantum cryptography, used by companies like Google and Microsoft, lacks the hardware-level security and physical guarantees offered by quantum-secure technologies. Similarly, traditional authentication in Quantum Key Distribution systems offers encryption relying on classical cryptographic methods which are not quantum-secure and are vulnerable to quantum computing attacks.

QSA Technology fills these gaps by delivering a hardware-based, quantum-resistant solution that complements Quantum Key Distribution and Wireless Optical Communication.

In the coming year, we are planning to build a team of around six engineers. We are also looking for technological collaboration partners to help unify and scale the technology. We are evolving from a collection of components into a cohesive system as a company.
